Born and raised in Summit, Mississippi, Alijah Martin knew he wanted to play basketball at the highest level from an early age. From watching his mom coach the game to embarking on a journey of his own in the sport, basketball was a space that allowed Alijah to feel free, compete, and let his creativity run wild. Moreover, it was a world that instilled—as he highlights—important personal qualities in him such as resilience, patience, persistence, and a strong work ethic. It wasn't all smooth sailing though. As Alijah recalls, it was in that transition from high school to college where he faced a series of challenges that tested his commitment to the game. From its speed to its physicality to its competitiveness, it seemed that none of his game translated to the collegiate level during his first year in college. Even in the midst of this adversity, he remained locked in. He was on a mission to reach his highest potential. Sure enough, after working day after day to strengthen his game on the floor and expand his skills on the court, he did just that. Not only did he overcome this early hurdle, but he thrived on the other side. Over his next few seasons at Florida Atlantic University (FAU), Alijah achieved several milestones and earned a series of accolades that were testament to his hard work—including the C-USA Tournament Most Outstanding Player award, an All-Conference USA First Team honor, and an induction into the 1,000-point club. After four seasons at FAU, Alijah decided to transfer to the University of Florida (UF) to continue his collegiate career. As he prepares for his first season at UF, Alijah is excited to have a winning season, grow his game further, and inch closer to his goal of playing in the NBA. Beyond the court, he is thrilled to host his 2nd Annual "Back to School Fun Day" and launch his annual "Alijah Martin Basketball Camp" back in his hometown. Amazing!
Let’s start with that transition from high school to college. As you reflect back on that journey early on, what were some challenges that you faced?
My transition from high school to college was very tough. My game really didn't translate as I thought it would, so I struggled my first year. I stuck with the plan though and I broke out my sophomore year. I started having great seasons after that.
How did you work to overcome those challenges in order to have that breakout season sophomore year?
The physicality, it was different. I couldn't stand in front of the ball, couldn't shoot the ball, couldn’t dribble the ball, couldn’t pass the ball. I couldn't do anything on the court. It came to the point where I was like: “Did I choose the right sport?” You know, I was second-guessing my decision-making. But then, I got all those thoughts out of my head and just got in the gym. I just started working and working, and things started changing.
From then on, you continued to elevate your game season after season and earned an array of accolades including entering the 1,000-point club, winning the Most Outstanding Player award in 2023 for the C-USA Tournament, and making the All-Conference USA First Team. What did achieving those milestones and earning those honors mean to you?
